Driving Public Health Impact: i-Sentra’s Role in Lamongan’s OpenDefecation Free (ODF) Success

In September 2016, Lamongan Regency launched the Open Defecation Free (ODF)
program—part of a broader sanitation initiative known as Sanitasi Total Berbasis
Masyarakat (STBM), or Community-Based Total Sanitation. The program aimed to
eliminate open defecation and promote healthier living environments across the region.

As a key stakeholder in this public health effort, i-Sentra actively partnered with local
government, NGOs, and community members to accelerate ODF progress—particularly in
the Paciran Subdistrict. Demonstrating its commitment to sustainable community
development, i-Sentra funded and oversaw the construction of 210 healthy latrines across
15 targeted villages, significantly increasing access to safe sanitation facilities. At the time,
only 60% of villages in Lamongan had access to healthy latrines.

The impact of this initiative extended beyond infrastructure. It reinforced the value of healthy
habits and preventive health, aligning with the Health pillar of the Community Empowerment
Program initiated by the JAPFA Foundation—i-Sentra’s parent company. Moreover, this
effort directly supported Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6: Clean Water and
Sanitation.

Thanks to these collective efforts, Lamongan Regency was officially declared 100% Open
Defecation Free in November 2017—a milestone that highlights the tangible impact of
coordinated action in improving community health and sanitation.
